Mentorship of URiM Faculty in Academic Medicine: Bridging Cross-Cultural Divides

Kathryn Fraser, PhD, is a Licensed Psychologist and the Behavioral Medicine Coordinator, at the Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency in Daytona Beach, Florida. Her academic interests include cultural issues in health care, provider wellness, relaxation therapies, and mentorship particularly with underrepresented and marginalized faculty in family medicine. Her leadership experiences include directing the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Underrepresented in Medicine Mentoring Program and the Behavioral Science/Family Systems Educator Fellowship (BFEF). She received STFM’s Inaugural Diversity Award in 2022 and also the Susan McDaniel Distinguished Career Award for behavioral science teaching in Family Medicine.
Objectives: As a result of this talk, participants will be able to:
Identify skills and challenges of URiM psychologists in academic health centers.
List ways that faculty can increase their awareness of the URiM experience, particularly in race discordant mentor/mentee pairings.
Develop personal goals to increase URiM psychologist mentees' job satisfaction and overall success in academic medicine.
